Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together.
The English language is a West Germanic language that originated in early medieval England and has since become a global lingua franca. Emerging from the dialects of Anglo-Saxon settlers, it was heavily influenced by Old Norse, Latin, and Norman French, resulting in a rich and diverse vocabulary. Today, English is the primary or secondary language of over 1.5 billion people worldwide and is the most widely spoken language in terms of total speakers. It serves as the official language of numerous countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, and dominates fields like science, business, technology, and entertainment. Its versatility and adaptability have made it a cornerstone of international communication and culture.
Norwegian (norsk) is a North Germanic language spoken primarily in Norway, where it is the official language and a key marker of cultural identity. It is closely related to Danish and Swedish, with high mutual intelligibility among the three languages due to shared linguistic roots. Norwegian has two official written forms: Bokmål, influenced by Danish, and Nynorsk, based on rural Norwegian dialects, both reflecting the country's historical and linguistic diversity. Spoken Norwegian, however, is highly dialectal, with significant regional variation that coexists harmoniously with the standardized written forms. Evolving from Old Norse, Norwegian is part of the West Scandinavian branch and is spoken by approximately 5.4 million people today, both in Norway and in Norwegian expatriate communities worldwide.
