The Sidecart project can really lower the barrier to entry for Atari ST hardware...even replacing the need for a floppy drive on a "floppy driveless" Atari 520STM (no internal floppy computer).
I take an ebay sourced sub-$100 Atari 520ST and get it up and running in a matter of minutes (after some minor deoxit and re-seating of chips).
