Getting over regret and leaving the past behind can be painful, especially when you are prone to ruminating. Getting over past mistakes or moving past missed opportunities is one of the hardest things to do. However, it is necessary to process our regrets and the emotional responses we have in order to live our best lives. There is nothing worse than thinking about what you should’ve said or done. Or, maybe all you can think about is bad choice you made that negatively impacted your life. The grief and grieving that comes with what we feel we have lost can become unbearable. Getting stuck in a pattern of regret and despair can cause depression, angst, anxiety, low self-esteem, poor self-confidence and other feelings that may be detrimental to our mental health and the ability to be present for yourself. Regret can also be obsessing over how you wish you past would have been.
