I was expecting the Amiga home conversion of Capcom's arcade classic to be awful, but I was genuinely surprised to discover that Elite did a pretty decent job on this one. The graphics are surprisingly accurate, which makes me wonder whether the developers had access to the original artwork, and audio isn't too bad either. There are some spot effects missing here and there, but nothing that really detracts from the overall experience.
As for the gameplay, it's OK. The controls, handling and scrolling are pretty decent, and unlike the C64 version, all the levels are present and correct. I did struggle with some pretty ropey collision detection with platforms on level 3, so much so I thought this was going to be another instance of a game an error on the part of the programmer rendered the game impossible to complete, but I did manage to get around the issue after a lot of finagling.
As coin-op conversions go, Ghost 'n Goblins on Amiga is far from the worst I've ever played. In fact, I think I'd have been pretty pleased with this back in the day. Some of the enemy movement patterns aren't great, and it's not possible to shoot while jumping backward like the arcade, but it's a decent effort - not bad at all!
