I had an amazing conversation with Professor Gilbert Strang, an American mathematician and renowned linear algebra professor known for his exceptional teaching skills. We discussed a wide range of topics, including what inspired him to pursue a career in mathematics, some of the most important moments in his academic career, and his focus on linear algebra as a primary area of expertise. He also shared insights on major mathematical discoveries or contributions he has made, how the role of mathematics in society has changed over the course of his career, and the challenge of making complex mathematical concepts accessible to students. We talked about effective ways to engage students in mathematics, abstract mathematical concepts and their practical relevance, and how teaching has evolved with the rise of online education platforms. Professor Strang also explained why linear algebra is such an essential field of study in mathematics, its influence on disciplines like computer science and engineering, and the most exciting modern applications of linear algebra, including numerical methods. We explored the significance of eigenvalues and eigenvectors in real-world problems, as well as the intersection of linear algebra with artificial intelligence and quantum mechanics. He shared his thoughts on how computational tools have changed the way we approach mathematical problems and discussed the role of MIT OpenCourseWare in making mathematical knowledge more accessible. Additionally, we covered current research problems in linear algebra, the challenge of translating abstract theory into practical applications, the distinction between pure mathematics and applied mathematics, and the most beautiful theorems in mathematics. Professor Strang also reflected on the mathematicians who have influenced him the most, memorable teaching or research experiences, and the future of the field of linear algebra in the next decade. Finally, he offered advice for young researchers or educators starting their careers in mathematics.
