'Gir Lions: The Pride of Gujarat' | Exclusive Story from GIR NATIONAL PARK | हिन्दी | Part 1 Producer: Wildlife Moments India Director: Amit Goswamy (Wildlife Biologist) The state of Gujarat in India is the only home of Asiatic Lions in the world. The population of Asiatic Lions was historically found across the belt between Africa to Asia from Mediterranean to most parts of north India. In fact till 1834 the Lions used to roam freely in the national capital Delhi where they eventually became extinct. Currently the last population of Asiatic Lions lives in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, India. Because of the continued efforts of the forest department, coupled with the support of the NGOs, local populations, researchers and biologists from WII and other agencies this conservation of lions have become a landmark success story of species revival. The increasing population of lions in Gir, has gone beyond the carrying capacity of the park because of which currently more than half of the lion population is living close to the human habitations outside the protected area. The story explores the dynamics of Gir Lion population along with the challenges and way forward.
