Willow offers cutting-edge performance across a range of metrics, enabling two major achievements:
First, Willow enables quantum errors to be exponentially reduced as the number of qubits increases. This opens up a path to solving the problem of quantum error correction, which has been on the table for nearly thirty years.
Second, Willow has been able to perform a standard reference calculation in less than five minutes that would take one of today's fastest supercomputers 10 trillion years—or 1025 years—a figure that far exceeds the age of the universe.
The Willow chip represents a major step in a journey that began more than ten years ago. When I founded Google Quantum AI in 2012, I had a vision of building a large-scale, functional quantum computer that could use quantum mechanics—nature’s “operating system” as we currently understand it—to benefit society. Such a computer would advance science, enable useful applications, and help find answers to some of the world’s greatest challenges. Within Google Research, our team has laid out a long-term roadmap, and with Willow, we’ve covered a significant milestone toward realizing commercially relevant applications.
