The report focuses on the opening of the 1961 Bayreuth Festival and Wieland Wagner's new production of "Tannhäuser", in which the African-American soprano Grace Bumbry was cast as Venus. It contains interviews with French festival attendees, the composer Guy Lafarge, the soprano Grace Bumbry, the writer Jean Mistler, and Wagner's granddaughter Friedelind Wagner.

The Bayreuth Festival is a music festival held annually in Bayreuth, Germany, at which performances of operas by the German composer Richard Wagner are presented. The festival was conceived by the composer himself and inaugurated in 1876. Performances take place in a specially designed theatre, the Bayreuth Festival Theatre.
