This is the seventh video tutorial in the Great Basics series. Nancy is starting the quilting process in her studio on the Great Basics quilt. She uses an older sewing machine with a large throat so there's lots of room to do the machine quilting. Instructions are included in the Great Basics book.
Nancy is using a Superior brand polyester thread in the top and in the bobbin. The top thread in the sewing machine is a Sew Fine brand polyester thread. The bobbin should have the same weight or a lighter weight thread. Nancy uses the Superior SuperBobs The Bottom Line Bobbins to save time in filling bobbins. If using a cotton thread on the top, a cotton thread should also be used in the bobbin. Nancy uses threads that are similar in color.
The book shows what order to do the quilting. Start by quilting around the inside edge using a walking foot. Sew on the ledge to secure the seam. The second stitch line is on the outside edge of the quilt. Nancy uses quilter's gloves to help keep a good grip on the quilt to move it around. Use tiny stitches to lock the thread and then make your stitches bigger. Let the machine do the work pulling the fabric through. Sew all the way around and then dial down to tiny stitches again to lock the thread at the end. Nancy shares a tip to bring up the bobbin thread to the top to trim along with the top thread.
Nancy uses invisible thread on the straight lines of the quilt. She calls it stabilizing stitching. Use a very fine invisible thread in your machine for the best results.
Nancy also uses Top Stitch needles when she machine quilts. This needle has a larger groove on the front side so the thread rides in the groove. This type of needle also helps to keep the thread from breaking.
Nancy shows how to stitch in the ditch with the invisible thread along all the straight lines. She uses her awl to help move the fabric under the walking foot if it begins to mound up. All of the setting squares and nine patches will be secured. Nancy will then be able to do the free motion quilting.
Look for the next video tutorial where Nancy will share how to do the free motion quilting with different designs. The designs are perfect for beginner quilters.
