THIS VIDEO: Photographer, Gregory Crewdson searches for mystery and beauty within something that, on the surface, feels very familiar, but at the same time is otherworldly. He says that his pictures are at the core, very personal – they reflect a psychological sense of anxiety, fear or desire that is a part of who he is. As much as he tries to push away from this core sensibility, he finds himself being drawn back again and again to these themes. He sees himself primarily as a storyteller – always seeking a form of the illusive perfect world that we all desire. Unlike film, photography’s ability to tell stories is restricted to the single frame. Crewdson latches on to this restrictive quality and compresses the narrative into one photograph. He never suggests answers or reveals any conclusions - these poignant moments offer just enough information to draw us to the narrative. As we engage with the mystery - we held in a suspended state which compels us to visualize our own beginning, middle and end. So unlike lyrical documentary photographers, he does ‘t look for poetry within reality but rather invents his version of reality.
