If you believe its name, the Maserati GT2 Stradale is a road racer. So, for the latest episode of The Driver’s Seat, Henry Catchpole is following the course of an old Italian Road Race - one that’s older than the Mille Miglia and faster than the Targa Florio. Snaking through the hills of northern Tuscany is the original Mugello circuit. Henry also drives the first mid-engined Maserati road car, the Bora. But, as usual, it’s not just any Bora, oh no. Owned by the amazing Umberto Panini collection, it is the very last Bora and has less than 250km on the clock. We also look at a statue and there is a brief detour to the La Marzocco factory to have an espresso and examine old coffee machines. One even has handlebars. The Maserati GT2 Stradale is a fascinating car, because at first glance you might think it would be too hardcore for a road trip. All the aggressive aero suggests it is something akin to a Lamborghini Huracan STO or a GT3 RS. However, the reality is that this is a surprisingly comfortable car that deals with bumps and lumps in the road with aplomb, although it keeps up a wonderful sense of connection with simply fabulous steering. Add in a turbocharged V6 engine that is as happy at low speed as it is delivering its full 631bhp punch, and you have a remarkably well-rounded package. Priced at a little over £270,000 or a touch over $310,000 (before you add any performance packs) the Maserati GT2 Stradale is certainly expensive, but with only 914 ever slated to be built it is also likely to be a relatively rare sight. We hope you enjoy this latest episode.
