The Roman Empire once stretched as far as Morocco! With a World Heritage Site quite close to both Meknes and Fez, you can see the remains of one of these outposts in the ruins of Volubilis. Take off with Tara to see Volubilis on a guided tour of the archaeological site. The Berber-Roman city of Volubilis was an important settlement for the Roman Empire in the 1st century AD, serving as one of the most southwestern outposts. The ruins of Volubilis are now one of Morocco’s most important archaeological sites, with a large number of well preserved features. In this episode of Take Off, Tara embarks on a guided tour of the archeological ruins of the ancient city and also stops over to the imperial city of Meknes, a commercial centre and also a market for fine embroidery and carpets, woven chiefly by Amazigh women of the Middle Atlas mountains. Most visitors, along with many Moroccans, do not, however, know about beautiful damascene metalwork. Known locally by the French name of damasquinerie, it is now only produced in one city in Morocco - Meknes.
