Networking Basics
To share information, data, and resources between devices we need a network.
Network
•Interconnection of Two or More Devices is called a Network.
•The Communication Between Two or More Interconnected Devices is called Networking
•An Internetwork is a Connection of Two or More Networks.
•Internetworking means Communication Between Different Networks.
Hub/Switch - a Network
Router - Internetworking Device, Communication between different Networks
Network - Physical or Logical Network
Physical Network - connection of device
Logical Network / Logical Topology -based configuration of IP Address(Logical Address) to the devices
Physical Topology:
The way of devices connected
BUS POINT TO POINT
RING POINT TO MULTIPOINT
MESH TREE
STAR
HYBRID
BUS - Devices are connected to a Backbone cable( Coaxial Cable), Easy to configure, difficult to troubleshoot, if backbone cable is broken further communication stops
RING - A Device is connected to another Device, another device connected to another device , the last device is connected to the first device. Devices communicate either clockwise direction or anticlockwise depends on configuration, Easy to configure, difficult to scale, if any device or connection is down, one side of communication stops
MESH - Every Device is connected to all other devices, Complex to configure, difficult troubleshoot, scale, but redundant. If any device or connection is down other devices communicate with each other. Used in Core networking, Servers, SAN Storage networks.
STAR - Every Device is connected to a centralized device which is either HUB, Switch. Devices communicate through the centralized device. If any device or connection is down other devices communicate with each other, if a centralized device(hub, switch) is down all communication stops. Easy to configure, easy to troubleshoot, Scaleable (extended network size)
HYBRID – combination of two or more topologies, Ex Full mesh topology used in SAN
* we are using STAR topology in our network
