This video describes a couple of tools that I used when I first started hammock camping. I was looking for a way to consistently get a good hang without tinkering with my hammock all day when I got to camp.
The first tool I discovered was The Ultimate Hang Calculator. There is an online version of this calculator as well as app that you can download to your phone. Basically, what this calculator does is that it takes in all the variables of your hammock setup and calculates all the metrics to achieve a consistent hang. I will walk you through this easy-to-use tool and show you how you can use it to get a consistent good hang every time you hit the trail.
The second tool I used was a Tape Measure app. I used this app to find the precise distance between two trees. I would then enter this data into The Ultimate Hang app, and along with my other variables, it would tell me exactly how high I should hang my hammock suspensions. And this was always the tricky part for me at first, was figuring out how high the hammock suspensions should go on the tree. With these two apps, it all became second nature.
You will soon find that as you keep using these apps on your backpacking trips, you begin to figure out it your head and can start eye balling it and become fairly accurate.
