Harlan Estate was started in 1984 by Bill Harlan, who wanted to create a first growth of California wine. His vineyard site is ideal: in the western hills of Oakville right above Martha's Vineyard and To Kalon. The vineyard is 240 acres of which 40 acres is planted with vines.
Harlan Estate's first commercial vintage was the 1990, which was released in 1996. The first vintage of The Maiden was the 1995 vintage. The vineyard composition is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The wine spends around 24 to 26 months in a mix of new and used French oak barrels. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered at the estate. About 2000 cases of Harlan and 1000 cases of The Maiden are produced each year.
In April of 2021, Bill's son Will Harlan was appointed CEO of Harlan.
