Hamas have played what might just be the last card they held and it could be the worst news Netanyahu has got yet!
Right, so have Hamas taken a course of action that put Israel in a bit of an awkward position? Well they might well have done. Israel’s entire reasoning for going back in to Gaza was to finish the job, total victory, destroy Hamas, but what if Hamas are no longer in control in Gaza? What if they relinquish power to someone else? What if they are not calling the shots anymore, who exactly will it be that Israel would be waging war on at that point in which case and how would the justify it when it is all supposed to be about Hamas?
This set of events has come about as the result of an all new Egyptian plan to try and restore the ceasefire in Gaza, a plan that involves replacing Hamas just as their widely accepted Gaza reconstruction plan involved and as was the case with that plan, Hamas had accepted it. Now with this new plan, Hamas could cease to be the governing entity of Gaza a lot sooner, not gone completely, not disarming, but a step in the right direction as far as Israel’s claimed goals go. Those goals are a whole lot of hot air though as we know, Israel have not accepted this new plan either to little surprise and even less media attention, but their excuses going forwards are going to be a lot more hollow now surely?
Right, so Egypt, have once again come up with a plan, once more positioned themselves as the key mediator with regards to Hamas and Israel, have put forward a new plan with regards to Gaza, a detailed ceasefire plan this time aimed at halting the violence Israel have returned to being the drivers of, restoring the ceasefire and establishing a new political framework for Gaza without Hamas.
The plan calls for the release immediately of 5 Israeli hostages, including Israeli-American Edan Alexander in the hope that this release alleviates US pressure on all sides, this release possibly leading Donald Trump to losing interest in Israel and Gaza, it really does say a lot when removing the so called leader of the free world from the equation is seen as a positive doesn’t it, but there we are.
During that first week humanitarian aid would be let back into Gaza, expanded as this would need to be to make up for the weeks of famine and starvation Israel has inflicted on Gaza.
At the end of the first week, phase 2 of the original ceasefire plan would then be implemented, so there’s the stumbling block for Israel for all to see, Netanyahu cannot end this war again now he’s restarted it and certainly not to return to phase 2 which would end his government as the far right of his coalition would certainly bring him down. That aside though, there is more to this plan which will make Israel’s excuses harder to swallow going forwards.
You see as part of Egypt’s new plan, the formation of what will be called the Community Support Committee will be formed. This body would form a new interim government of Gaza, taking it away from Hamas and Hamas have agreed to it.
