Have you ever tried an Asian crepe popular in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia called by different names? Most commonly it's called Kuih Dadar, Kuih Ketayap, Kuih Tayap or Kuih Gulung depending on who you speak to. "Kuih" is a Malay word that means "cake". It is also a Penang Hokkien word as Penang Hokkiens centuries ago used some Malay words in their conversational dialect. The word "dadar" means omelette in English. Literally translated into English, "Kuih Dadar" is a "cake omelette". It neither resembles a cake or an omelette. It is actually a sweet snack that looks more like a crepe or thin pancake, filled with caramelised grated coconut and rolled into a spring roll-like. Hence, the other Malay word called "gulung" meaning roll. Penang Hokkien used a similar word "gulung" as the Malay, to describe the method of rolling something into a roll. crepe | french crepe | thin pancake | pancake | asian desserts | asian cakes | asian kuih | nyonya kuih | kuih ketayap | kuih tayap | kuih dadar | kuih gulung | nyonya snacks | nyonya sweets | malaysian desserts | malaysian sweets | Indonesian kuih | indonesian kuih gulung | what is an asian crepe | how to make a nyonya kuih | how to make crepe | palm sugar | how to make thin pancake | |how to use grated coconut | how to use shredded coconut | how to make a nyonya kuih called kuih dadar | asian pandan crepe
