Most of us (with the exception of Buddy Rich) cannot simply listen to a song once and know it and all of its nuances. In order to thoroughly learn a song, we either have to listen to it on repeat for a while, practice playing along with it, or, in a time crunch, write a chart. Chart writing is my favorite method for learning songs because it helps me visualize the form and get the entire song in my head much quicker. Even if I have a week before I need to know the song, I’ll still write out a chart just for reference. In this video I include examples of different charts I’ve written - simple and complex. I also demonstrate the steps I go through to chart a song.
