Wow! This cruise is going by so fast! We are already visiting our third Hawaiian Island which is the big island of Hawaii. Today we are porting in Hilo and have plans to see a volcano and a black sand beach!
We taxi over to the airport to get our rental car... which was sooo much easier than in Maui! And they surprised us with an upgrade to a sports car!! Off to the volcano!! We arrive at Volcanoes National Park and go to the visitor's center to get the lay of the land. In speaking to a park ranger, she tells us that we won't see any red lava during the day, you really have to come at night to see this. But we can experience everything else. There are some amazing lookouts over the crater where you can see the constant smoke AND we were able to walk through the lava tubes! Pretty cool!
Then we are on the hunt for black sand! We drive about 40 minutes south to Punalu'u Black Sand Beach... and just WOW! This is like nothing we have ever seen before! It is beautiful... and hot! I mean it is volcanic after all...
On the way back, we grab some lunch and then have to find a waterfall before heading back to the ship... Akaka Falls was a beautiful waterfall to see... and a much shorter hike than the one on Oahu!! Such a fun day!
