In May 2024 we dropped a trailer for a film produced in collaboration with talented film maker Keelan Walker of Loud Noise Media.

We are thrilled to now share with everyone the full release of this film - “He Kura Ika Waitī - The Treasured Fish of the Freshwaters” which will offer a profound appreciation for the ika that grace our waterways.

The documentary follows the journey of our indigenous fish species and efforts in the Tasman District of Aotearoa New Zealand to improve the ability for native fish to move through local waterways.

Featuring breathtaking footage from the sky, land, and beneath the water, showcasing the awe-inspiring beauty of our rivers and the challenges faced by our fish during migration.

It’s a must-see video, for so many reasons. You’ll be moved by the incredible journey of our treasured fish and the passionate people working to ensure their survival, Gain a deeper appreciation for the beauty and significance of our freshwater species and their role in our ecosystem.
You’ll discover the rich cultural heritage tied to these species and how they are an integral part of our identity.

This film will also show you how small actions can lead to big changes in restoring and protecting our waterways.

It includes mahi (work) supported by the Jobs for Nature Project (2021-2026), showcasing efforts to restore our waterways and enable fish migration under our Fish Passage programme, as well as the efforts to rejuvenate and increase the function of our wetlands in a number of locations across Tasman.

A special word of acknowledgment to Keelan and all those dedicated individuals working across Aotearoa to protect and restore our precious freshwater ecosystems. Your efforts are truly inspiring and vital for the future of our environment.
