The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said Friday it's looking into the possibility of faulty equipment in a military helicopter that potentially led to the deadly Jan. 29 midair collision with an American Airlines flight preparing to land at Reagan National Airport, resulting in 67 deaths. That detail came from NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy, who said the cockpit of the military helicopter might have received faulty data in the cockpit of the three-man helicopter during its training flight outside D.C. and near the Potomac River. -------------------------------------------------- For more on the lead story: https://komonews.com/news/nation-world/new-details-airplane-crash-dc-audio-transcripts-cause-potomac-collision-ntsb-midair-collision-recordings-reagan-airport-67-killed-cockpit-voice-recorder-data-flight-black-hawk-helicopter-safety-update# _______________ Stay up to date with our social media: KOMO News on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/KOMONews/ KOMO News on Twitter: https://twitter.com/komonews KOMO News on Instagram: http://instagram.com/komo4 KOMO News on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@komo4seattle Subscribe to KOMO on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC__2_0RJ8XnHt2angfw6S1Q/?sub_confirmation=1 Watch more top local news stories: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G97AyNO_3IE&list=PLZm7uq7_dyY6qhFFIwgXRvYpkaOnZEabc&index=2&t=0s For all of the day’s top local and national news, visit http://www.komonews.com/ Watch our live newscasts and other live video at https://komonews.com/watch Download our iOS App: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/komo-news-mobile/id433508161?mt=8 Download our Android App: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.newssynergy.komo&hl=en Have a news tip? It's likely, officials said, that a message sent from air traffic control to both aircraft informing the helicopter to pass behind American Airlines flight 5342 did not fully transmit to the helicopter. That message was sent 17 seconds before the collision, NTSB officials said. The crash involved an American Airlines flight and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter, marking one of the deadliest aviation accidents in recent years. Ahead of the 2 p.m. briefing, NTSB member Todd Inman spoke with 7News Reporter Nick Minock about what to expect from Friday’s update. The NTSB spent much of the Friday afternoon news conference breaking down the timeline and transcripts from the crash from flight recorders recovered by emergency crews. Previously, Inman emphasized that while transcripts from the recordings will be released, the NTSB will not release actual audio out of respect for those involved. Inman is one of five NTSB members. As recovery efforts continue on the Potomac River, NTSB investigators remain piecing together and inspecting the wreckage from both aircraft. Investigators will be looking for witness marks that could provide clues to the angle of collision. #komo #komonews #komo4 #komo4news #seattle #seattlenews #washingtonnews #ntsb #investigation #americanairlines #PotomacRiver #RonaldReaganNationalAirport #dmv #blackhawkhelicopter #faa #kennedycenter #plane #audio #breaking #live #live #press conference This video and all Sinclair Broadcast Group content archives of local news and sports coverage are available for your use.
