There are many reasons why students often don’t want to speak English in our classrooms. These relate to having the need to speak, having the confidence to speak in front of others, and having the necessary tools to do so. In this session, after briefly exploring the reasons why students don’t want to speak in English, we will look at the conditions that teachers need to establish in their classrooms. We will match these conditions with practical teaching techniques to help students develop the confidence to speak in English.

Philip Haines is originally from the UK but has lived in Mexico for 30 years. He works as a Global Professional Development Consultant for Oxford University Press and has been training teachers for over 20 years throughout Mexico and Latin America.
