For decades, the Darién was considered so dangerous that only a few thousand dared to cross it each year. Today, it is a traffic jam.
Since January, at least 215,000 people have crossed the Darién, almost double the number last year, and almost 20 times the annual average between 2010 and 2020.
The massive flood of migrants through the Darien is fueling a growing political problem in the United States, where more than 2.3 million people have been apprehended at the southern border this year, an unprecedented surge that has put intense pressure on President Joe Biden to stop the flow.
The people crossing the Darién this year are overwhelmingly Venezuelan, many worn out by years of economic calamity under authoritarian rule.
But they are only one part of the diverse movement of migrants traversing the jungle: Cubans, Haitians, Ecuadorians and Peruvians are also crossing in large numbers, while Afghans, many fleeing the Taliban, are among the groups they grow faster.
The mountain of death or mountain of la llorona, is one of the most difficult points to cross in the darien plug, every day around 5 people fight to get out of this mountain alive.
