Amid the hustle and bustle of Phoenix sit the remains of what were homes prior to what we recognize today. Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve, Pueblo Grande, and Casa Grande are just a few examples of the Hohokam culture that once was.
Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve, operated by ASU, is located in north Phoenix and features over a thousand petroglyphs from multiple tribes over hundreds and thousands of years. Visitors can see petroglyphs etched into large basalt rocks from Hohokam and Patayan cultures across a quarter-mile trail. Signs point out etchings of interest and provide information along the way.
Pueblo Grande Museum Archaeological Park is located in the heart of Phoenix near Sky Harbor Airport. Here visitors can encounter a village site and wander a 2/3-mile trail that winds through building remains atop a platform mound. In addition, one can enter full-size replicas of pueblos and pithouses similar to what was used by the Ancestral Sonoran Desert People, or Hohokam.
Just outside Phoenix in Coolidge are the impressive remains of Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. Underneath the protection of a ramada is the ruins of what once was the "Big House" or "Great House" from the site. It is thought that this structure, made of caliche, was once four stories tall. Also on site are several remaining walls from the complex.
