And in the last decades, it has been unanimously accepted by paleontologists that tetrapods evolved from elpistostegalians, a close relative of fish, with the most prominent example being the Tiktaalik. This would explain why all tetrapods share a four-limbed build (or less in some cases). But the origin of the tetrapod is not as straightforward as it first seemed, thanks to a new discovery that might reshape our understanding of tetrapod evolution.
