Hobi Chose BTS Over Instant Popularity In Bigger Agency | j-hope Opens Up About On & Off Stage Personas
Hobi was a young dreamer like all of us. With hard work and perseverance, he eventually turned his dream into reality.
Hobi is one of the most sought-after celebrities in the world. I mean, not everyone could get an invite from Louis Vuitton. Then attending the afterparty with LV's men of the hour, Pharrell and Nigo.
Brands are now fighting to get a chance to endorse Hobi. But over a decade ago, BTS was fighting to get a chance to live their dreams. Not all ARMY may know this, but Hobi was the first trainee to sign a contract with Big Hit. Bang PD mentioned Hobi's incredible work ethic, making him a total stand-out.
Hobi's talent and charisma made it easy for him to pass any audition. Facing the opportunities that he had been waiting for, Hobi was weighing options for his career. In the end, Hobi chose his heart and decided to debut with his friends. Even before landing a spot in the group, Hobi was already performing. He was part of the underground dance team Neuron and was already a well-known dancer before his debut. That being said, Hobi had dedicated most of his life to dance.
While Hobi found his purpose as a performer, he previously revealed that he was not as solid as Jung Hoseok. In Episode 5 of BTS’s docuseries Break The Silence, Hobi opened up on what it’s like to maintain a persona both on and off the stage. Hobi shared that he has a persona he wants to show to everyone. But since he is mostly known as BTS’s j-hope, it becomes the persona that is easier to share. Hobi pointed out that he is not being fake when he’s j-hope. However, idols are expected to uphold certain standards as public figures at all times. For Hobi, that means shifting Jung Hoseok to j-hope in front of ARMY and the public.
It is worth noting that Hobi’s BT21 character is Mang, a dancer wearing a horse mask. Nobody knew the true identity of Mang as he always wore a mask to hide who he really was. Since BTS created their own BT21 characters, the concept of Mang is definitely not just a random thing. After Hobi opened up about his two personas, the story of Mang became clearer. Hobi eventually decided to give Mang a face reveal. The possible reason is that Hobi had already learned to merge both of his worlds and realized that he was destined to be j-hope of BTS. So he wanted Mang to have that piece of peace.
