"Wicked" is a 2024 American musical fantasy film directed by Jon M. Chu, adapted from the beloved Broadway musical of the same name. The film stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and Ariana Grande as Glinda, the Good Witch. With unforgettable songs like "The Wizard and I," "Popular," and "Defying Gravity," "Wicked" delivers the grandeur and emotional depth of the stage in spectacular fashion.
My Takeaway: I didn't plan to watch this film - *WICKED* maybe the BEST Movie Musical in the last 20 Years!! I was content to avoid it outright - no multiplex, no VOD. Listen, I like music. I like dance. I just like them separate. Musicals aren't my thing. That said, I am a fan of Jon M. Chu's direction and vision, a fan of Cynthia Erivo's vocals, and a fan of cinema - so I gave it a chance, and I was happy I did! I liked that it made me FEEL more than I thought I would - and laugh (and cry a little), too. The film explores profound themes like ostracism and the perception of "wickedness," as Elphaba transforms from a misunderstood outcast to the iconic Wicked Witch of the West.
