Honoré Fragonard (1732-1799) was one of the most intriguing figures of the Enlightenment era. A French anatomist and cousin of the renowned painter, Fragonard was a surgical pioneer who pushed the boundaries of science and art.
In a time when anatomical science was still emerging, he developed a revolutionary method to preserve corpses, creating "écorchés"—anatomical specimens stripped of skin—which he transformed into dramatic and haunting displays. These macabre figures, with their eerie grimaces, evoke both admiration and unease.
Though only fragments of his work remain today, Fragonard’s creations continue to captivate, blurring the line between science and art, and leaving behind a legacy as controversial as it is fascinating.
