As we approach Halloween, Fresh Air is revisiting a 1987 episode with horror director Wes Craven, who revitalized the genre with his "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Scream" movie franchises. Craven has been called the Sultan of Shock and the Guru of Gore. In this interview, he talks about working his way up in the film industry before unexpectedly getting the chance to direct "The Last House on the Left," which was a controversial success with its graphic portrayal of rape and murder. This interview originally aired July 30, 1987. “FRESH AIR” from WHYY, the Peabody Award-winning weekday magazine of contemporary arts and issues, is one of public radio's most popular programs.
