How Do You Paint a Patch and Apply Decals? - Painting & Weathering: Rust Bucket Boxcar Part 3

Painting & Weathering can make an ordinary model look ultra-realistic. With the right weathering, a shiny, out-of-the-box freight car can look like a real piece of railroad equipment that's been on the road for years.

As with most things in the model railroading hobby, there is more than one way to get there. In this series, Dan explores a variety of weathering and painting techniques, using them in combination to produce very realistic results.

Dan uses an old Branchline Berwick boxcar as the first subject of this new series. Working from photos, Dan is trying to create a freelanced car that closely follows the look of similar real boxcars.

In episode 1, Dan talked about different techniques to achieve a faded look.

In episode 2, Dan explored adding 3 different types of rust - a thin rusty haze, dark rust spots, and rust streaks and haloes.

In this final episode Dan paints patched out areas on the car, applies new reporting mark decals and date stencils, and puts the car back together!
