Jim Gordon (1945–2023) was a renowned American drummer and songwriter who became one of the most sought-after session musicians in the 1960s and ‘70s. He played on iconic tracks such as Derek and the Dominos’ “Layla” and was a member of the Wrecking Crew, performing with artists like Eric Clapton, George Harrison, and the Beach Boys. Despite his musical success, Gordon struggled with severe mental health issues, later diagnosed as schizophrenia. His condition worsened, leading him to tragically taking his mothers life in 1983. He spent the remainder of his life in prison, where he continued to receive treatment for his illness. He died in prison in 2023.
