Naruto and Sasuke are reincarnations of Ashura and Indra. This is a massive Naruto retcon done in the end of the War Arc of Naruto Shippuden. Indra and Ashura were sons of Hagoromo, the Sage of Six Paths, and we knew Naruto and Sasuke were their descendants, but Kishimoto came up with the reincarnation part at the last minute.
Naruto vs Sasuke has major parallels to Ashura vs Indra and Madara vs Hashirama, who were also reincarnations. This retcon creates a lot of problems for Naruto and Sasuke as characters, as well as to the entire Naruto Manga as a whole. The Naruto anime makes it even worse adding more detail backstory for Indra and Ashura. Let's explore this topic in this video.
