CLONE DRONE IN THE HYPERDOME is one of the most impressive VR games I’ve played in a while, but unfortunately…not for all the right reasons. It's impressive how much care and attention they put into the story, the world, the voice acting, the interactions, and the physics…..and its also simultaneously impressive how all of that falls apart because one one simple design choice when it comes to gameplay.
You see, this VR game is a sequel to the flatscreen game Clone Drone in the Danger Zone. What made that game really unique was its focus on physics based voxel destruction. You played as a robot wielding a laser sword and because of the voxel artstyle, and the nature of laser swords, you can cut through enemies in a huge variety of ways. Chop off heads, dismember limbs, grind them into dust once they hit the floor…it was really unique and more importantly really satisfying. Throw in the fact that the same things could happen to YOU, and you have the basis for a challenging yet rewarding combat system. This VR sequel attempts to bring everything you may have loved about the original game into VR, but in doing so makes a few changes that end up hurting the entire experience.
