How Open Strings Create That Hypnotic Sound You Hear In Your Favorite Songs

I was capturing some golden light in my studio at the end of the day while playing my nylon-string guitar. I've been listening to Willie Nelson lately, particularly his album "The Last Leaf on the Tree," and I appreciate how he always plays his nylon-string guitar "Trigger," which has such a beautiful, mellow quality. This guitar I'm playing is sort of my own version of Trigger. I got it a few years back and call it my "beach guitar," though I use it in the studio quite a bit too.
I wanted to share a simple fingerpicking technique in the key of G that reminds me of Willie Nelson's style. The beauty of the G chord is how it utilizes those wonderful open strings. I start with my finger on the G note (third fret, low E string) and demonstrate how to create what I call an "internal melody" within the chord. The technique involves hammering on the second fret of the D string, then sliding up to the fourth fret while letting the open strings ring out. I also show a variation using the pinky on the third fret of the B string.
It's a simple pattern—down strokes on the low G and D strings, then upstrokes on the B and high G strings but it creates a lovely sound. I demonstrate how to add a C major 7th chord (like a C but with the first finger lifted from the B string) before returning to G.
