Vancouver’s Sky Global promised privacy to customers with its encrypted cell phones, Sky ECC, which were a hit with the criminal underworld, arms dealers and drug traffickers. But after police cracked the code and unlocked thousands of messages between criminals, the phones became the target of an international police sting. Police watched as criminals freely sent each other text messages and pictures of piles of money, drugs, weapons and even kidnappings.
CBC’s The Fifth Estate goes behind the scenes of the controversial police operation that brought down thousands of criminals – and Sky ECC.
00:00 - Meet Jean-François Eap, CEO of the company that invented Sky ECC encrypted phones
09:57 - Police break the Sky encryption code
18:05 - Investigating some to the top distributors of SKY phones and their ties to dangerous criminals
32:00 - Canadian police seem powerless to shut down encrypted phone companies, popular with criminals
