1. Love what you do
When he was two years old, his father left the family.

He began writing for fun while still in school.
3. Explore new ideas
He studied at the University of Maine, graduating in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts in English.
4. The good idea stays with you
He has worked as a teacher at Hampden Academy in Hampden, Maine.

He continued to contribute short stories to magazines and worked on ideas for novels.
6. Learn from rejections
His first novel Carrie was accepted by publishing house Doubleday.
7. Look for ideas you enjoy
He has published 54 novels, including seven under the pen name Richard Bachman.
8. Find your creative process
He has written nearly 200 short stories.
9. Pass something on
He has received Bram Stoker Awards, World Fantasy Awards, and British Fantasy Society Awards.
10. Tell great stories
He was awarded with a National Medal of Arts for his contributions to literature.
