The federal government has announced major changes to migration - mostly centred on tightening up visa conditions for international students and temporary migrant workers. It's the next stage of an overhaul designed to put the emphasis back on permanent migration within a smaller overall program.
It comes as support for migration - and the government - is under pressure as a result of national housing shortages. Emphasising the point, the government also announced a tripling of fees for foreign investors wanting to buy property in Australia.
