One perfectly normal day I received an unexpected meeting invite from my boss.  2pm, his office. I walked in and sat uncomfortably on the chair about to hear the news… And you know when you’re trying to be cool but feel a bit like an awkward teenager, not knowing where to put your hands, nerves swirling in your stomach, feeling a sweat, heart thudding.  My boss starts talking... They were making redundancies and he was sorry it had come to this but he had to let me and 20 other people go - my colleague James was staying, the other project director, as he had relationships in the industry he needed for their next phase.  Have you ever had one of those moments where it takes a few seconds to realise what’s just been said…. First you’re confused, but then the realisation starts sinking in….  you get that shocked sick feeling at the bottom of your stomach … And when you understand what they just said.. That realisation turns into confusion then frustration…. You don’t understand why it happen? Why they’ve made that decision? After all i’ve done on these key projects I totally didn’t expect this?  This wasn’t the plan… I wanted to have a successful career I wanted to make a difference, wanted to feel like my career had purpose.I wanted to get recognition for my work. Not just be slogging my guts away all the time, firefighting, taking work home, working crazy hours, missing out on time with my family, my friends, missing out on my life! I thought i’d be further ahead….  NOT staying at the same level for years … And definitely NOT being let go. What was i missing? Was I doing something wrong?What was I not doing that I should have been? I’m sure you’ve had similar experiences to where I was… You know the value in working hard and want to be rewarded for it…. You feel like you have so much more to contribute.  BUT In reality… You’re exhausted, working full on, never time to think about yourself, Why are you not getting ahead? Why are you not being visible? Why aren’t people noticing your efforts? James’s working day compared with mine!!! He wasn’t being lazy… He was actually doing something that hadn’t even occurred to me…. There was a reason that James spent all that time with the senior team… …to be seen.  AND I REALIZED… And the senior managers weren’t seeing my hard work because they weren’t seeing me at all. … they were seeing James.  If I wanted to make all that hard work count it was AS IMPORTANT to make my work and expertise seen - by the people that made decisions, by the senior team, because otherwise why would they be paying attention to me? They wouldn’t. He wasn’t waiting around for people to notice, he wasn’t waiting around to be told he was doing a good job, he was being seen by the senior team and getting ahead - he had a plan and he was strategically executing it… Every single day.
