DWC stands for deep water culture. Most people look for DWC systems without knowing the method is actually just water culture hydroponics. The addition of the word "deep" just means the system is at least 8 to 10 inches deep. How Does a Deep Water Culture System Work? A plant is suspended in a net cup above the nutrient solution in the reservoir. The reservoir in this case is a bucket. As the root system of the plant grows it relies on dissolved oxygen in the water to survive. In the system we're building, an air pump (aerator) oxygenates the water. Without this aeration, the nutrient solution (water) would become stagnant and a fully submerged root system would die.
