Bench cuts are a critical part of any trail. In this episode of trail building 101 the series where we cover all the basics of building trails for mountain biking, we are taking a look at bench cuts.
Without bench cuts, contour trails wouldn't be possible. We would all be freeriding straight down the hill holding on for dear life. As fun as that can be it doesn't leave the trail in good shape. If the trail just runs straight down the hill it means it is following the "fall line".
The fall line is the path of least resistance, in other words, it is the path water follows.
