To calculate the power requirements and connections for an MCPCB (Metal-Core Printed Circuit Board) with SMD LEDs, you need to consider a few key aspects:
Calculating Power (Watts), Voltage, and Current:
Determine Power Requirements (Watts):
For an Individual LED: Power (W) = Voltage (V) × Current (A)
For the Entire Board: Multiply the power of a single LED by the total number of LEDs on the MCPCB.
Calculate Total Voltage and Current:
Series Connection: In a series connection, the total voltage is the sum of the voltages of each LED. The current remains the same as for one LED.
Total Voltage (V) = Voltage of one LED × Number of LEDs in series
Current (A) = Current of one LED
Parallel Connection: In a parallel connection, the total voltage remains the same as for one LED. The total current is the sum of the currents of each LED.
Total Voltage (V) = Voltage of one LED
Total Current (A) = Current of one LED × Number of LEDs in parallel
Example with 6V SMD LEDs:
Series Connection:
Suppose each SMD LED operates at 6V and 150mA.
If you connect 10 LEDs in series:
Total Voltage = 6V × 10 = 60V
Total Current = 150mA (same as one LED)
Parallel Connection:
Suppose each SMD LED operates at 6V and 150MA.
If you connect 10 LEDs in parallel:
Total Voltage = 6V (same as one LED)
Total Current = 150MA × 10 = 150ma
MCPCB Considerations:
Heat Dissipation: Ensure the MCPCB is designed to handle the heat generated by the LEDs. The metal core helps with heat dissipation, but check the specifications for thermal management.
Power Supply: Choose a power supply that matches the total voltage and current requirements of your LED setup.
In summary, carefully calculate the total voltage and current based on the series or parallel configuration of your LEDs, and ensure your MCPCB and power supply can handle these requirements.
