The SCIENTIFIC approach to ice fishing is not something you see every day in the realm of fishing for stocked trout. People usually just drill a couple holes and drown bait until the fish show up and eat it. This simplistic method of catching stocked rainbow trout works and is a great way for new anglers to get into the sport of ICE FISHING.
There is more to ice fishing than baiting and waiting, so if you are interested in learning then join me as I try to create a little experiment fishing around a lake. I want to see if I am more successful moving from hole to hole over short periods of time rather than staying stationary for longer periods of time. Of course I did not have a control as there is only one of me and I can't leave the Jaw Jacker in while I am fishing with a Rod in hand in BC. So NO CONTROL. Still a cool little trial to see what happens.
Lots of fish were encountered in this video and captured on underwater camera. The problem was I was losing lots of fish. I figure my losses were due to the size of the jig I was using. May have been too small to get a great hook set. I was also watching and setting the hook visually which doesn't seem to work well for me. Then there was the whole fact that many fish were barely nipping the bait and bumping the bait. These trout look quite educated. I guess that is how they get to large sizes. Seems I just educated them more on this day and TWO FAILED the TEST.
I hope you enjoy the map I created from saving the fish encounters on my phone during the day. Pretty neat to see the times of fish coming around and the RED STARS each represent a fish that interacted with my hook. It also seems in the underwater videos that a lot of the fish are traveling in PAIRS actually which was quite interesting to me.
