In this video I show you exactly how to change your Automatic Transmission Fluid on your Isuzu Mu-x, Isuzu D-max, Toyota Fortuner, Toyota Prado, Toyota Hilux and multiple other vehicles. Changing the transmission fluid is a job that is often overlooked and forgotten during servicing. Unfortunately this can result in large repair bills and major issues when it comes to your Automatic Transmission. It is a good idea to change or flush your transmission oil approximately every 60-80,000km depending on the driving conditions that the vehicle is put under. If you do a lot of towing or 4wding then it may be a good idea to change that fluid sooner.
I use Castrol Transmax Multivehicle ATF which is a fully synthetic DEXIII universal automatic transmission fluid. There are multiple different oils available and you can pick your oil depending on your budget and also your personal preference. It is important to have between 8 and 16L of transmission fluid to carry out the transmission service. This is because we need to change the oil out of the transmission sump multiple times to bring the oil quality back up to a good level.
To change your transmission fluid you will require some basic hand tools, spanners, sockets, ratchets, 5mm Allen key, train pan, small oil pump and gloves. I show you how to change your transmission oil in a few simple steps. Changing your transmission oil is definitely a DIY job that you can carry out at home with some simple tools. If your fluid is very dark however you may require a transmission oil flush from a transmission specialist workshop.
Here is a quick guide to changing your transmission oil -
Step 1- Drive vehicle and get up to operating temp, approx 15-20mins
Step 2- Remove 24mm fill bung from drivers side of transmission
Step 3- Remove 14mm drain bung from bottom of transmission
Step 4- Catch oil in drain pan
Step 5- Jack vehicle up to get out any extra oil left over
Step 6 -Measure drained transmission oil
Step 7- Refill transmission through fill bung with same amount of oil drained out
Step 8- refit and tighten drain and fill bungs
Step 9- Drive vehicle again and repeat steps 2-8 until fluid looks clean and clear
Step 10- After final oil change go through gears, holding for 5 seconds each
Step 11- Run vehicle and ensure trans temp is between 50-60 degrees
Step 12- Remove check bung and ensure small stream of oil comes out
Step 13- Refit and recheck all bungs and clean down transmission
Step 14- Final Road test vehicle and re check for any leaks
Step 15- Enjoy 60-80000km of trouble free motoring!
Transmission oil changes are a very important part of vehicle servicing and need to be maintained every 60-80000km. By keeping our transmission oil clean and fresh we will ensure that the transmission shifts smoothly even when cold. It also will reduce the risk of having big repair bills down the track if we ever have an issue with the transmission.
Cheers Guys :)
