I will show you how to check the cap of a car's expansion tank if the engine boils on the road. Normal pressure in the cooling system of cars is 1.2-1.3 atmospheres, but it may differ in different cars. There are only two types of expansion tank plug failure:
- No pressure. In a modern (hot engine), the cap JUST MUST contribute to the injection of atmospheres (from 1.1 to 1.4). Otherwise the engine will boil.
- Excessive pressure. When the cork holds more than 1.4 Atmospheres, for example 2.0 or even higher! This is also dangerous, you can throw off hoses and pipes from the cooling system, rupture the radiators (and they are now made with plastic walls). This again can lead to depressurization of the system and its overheating.
You can buy a new plug, but there is no guarantee that it is of high quality and maintains the required pressure in the cooling system.
To test the car's expansion tank cap, I assembled a small test bench from the car's brake fluid reservoir, but you can use an old expansion tank.
In addition to the tank, you will need a piece of strong hose of suitable diameter, 4 clamps, a bolt and a nipple from an old car or bicycle tube. We screw the plug onto the tank, plug one fitting with a hose with a plug, and attach a hose with a nipple to the second. We apply air pressure from a car pump with a pressure gauge through the nipple into the tank and look at its readings. If you do not have a suitable tank, you can connect the pump directly to the car's expansion tank. This way you will check the plug and the tightness of the entire engine cooling system, but the air pressure must be carefully monitored. If you apply too much pressure, the seal of the vehicle's cooling system may be compromised.
If the pump starts pumping, reaches 1.4 Atmospheres, then the valve opens and excess pressure is released, hissing appears (but 1.3-1.4 Atmospheres remains, even after you turn off the pump) - then it can be installed working on the machine . THIS IS 100% CHECKED!
Do-it-yourself repair of the expansion tank plug involves checking all the excess springs, the vacuum valve and the condition of the rubber gaskets of these valves.
