How to Connect to an Autistic Person | For Counselors, Employers, Family, Friends, & Teachers What do Autistics need from everyone else? This is a question that's often asked by people who are trying to make a connection with an autistic person whether it be a family member, a friend, peer, employer, teacher, or therapist. Neurotypicals don't seem to understand how to treat or even really connect with autistic people. Often, we're infantilized, disrespected, invalidated, left out, skipped over, rejected, and even have our autonomy taken away. But, there are things you can and should do to help us. We are after all human, so show us the same decency you'd show anyone else. I've developed 6 pillars that you should think about when interacting with autistic people; Validation, Inclusion, Understanding, Acceptance, Equity, and Respect.
