Onion and garlic crops are about to mature within a month in most parts of the country. Thrips (Thrips tabaci) is the most important insect of onion and garlic crops. Its attack is aggravated in spring season until the maturity of crop in April and May. This is a tiny and cylindrical insect found in groups inside the whorles of onion and garlic. Adult and the young ones are sucking insects due to the attack of which bulb quality and quantity are badly affected. If not controlled well in time, crop may be lead to utter failure.
In this video we have advised the farmers that they should remain cautious, manage pest scouting of thrips twice a week. It has further been suggested that onion and garlic thrips is more effective controlled with a satisfactory spray of Radiant 120 SC- Arysta life science (spintoram) @ 80-100 ml/acre. It is relatively costly but established as human friendly, soft insecticide and provides long shot control. It has now become very tolerant to old sucking pesticides like imidacloprid and acetamiprid. In addition to Radiant, Pirate-Swat Agro (Chlorfenapyr) or Proaxis- Arysta life science (gama cyhalothrin)either @ 100 ml/acre or Solvego-Syngenta or Curakran may also be used as effective alternate.
It has further been stressed that faulty spray may not produce effective results. It is very necessary to convey spray material inside the whorls of onion and garlic. In garlic it may be managed through one spray but in case of late maturing onion and G-1 garlic 2-3 time repeated spray is suggested.
