Do you sit too low at the piano? Too high? How can you tell? And why is it important? We answer all of those questions today and also talk through how to realize each adjustment in a variety of ways, from using books laying around the house to the most expensive adjustable benches and pedal extenders! This is part 3 of 5 in the series "Bench Position, Posture, and Hand Shape."

Top Takeaways:
► Takeaway #1: While sitting straight up with good posture, our forearm, wrist, and hand should be straight, and they should make a parallel line with the floor.
► Takeaway #2: Bench position that is too low can result in unnatural angles in the arm, wrist, and hand, and can prevent efficient technique from developing... It also has the potential to lead to injury.
► Bonus Tidbit: Many modern concert pianists sit on the higher side of "correct" because of the extra power it allows the most advanced players.
► Takeaway #3: Ways to achieve correct bench height: 1) An adjustable bench, 2) Add books to bench top, 3) Add carpet squares to bench top, 4) Books under bench legs
► Takeaway #4: Avoid using pillows or cushions on hard, glossy bench tops. They can slip, slide, and move while you are playing. In the best case this is a distraction. In the worst case, you might fall off the bench!
► Takeaway #5: It's just as important after we find the correct bench height to also make sure the legs aren't dangling and the feet are supported. You can use very simple items like a piece of wood, or a folding step stool to help achieve this. Or can you spring for an adjustable pedal extender!
