The Spanish explorer Cortés may have been the first to introduce the small yellow tomato to Europe after he conquered the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, in Mexico, in 1521. Christopher Columbus may have brought them to Europe earlier, but he did not. The first scientific discussion of the tomato dates to 1544. Pietro Andrea Mattioli, an Italian physician and botanist, named the new fruit pomo d'oro or golden apple. The Aztecs and other peoples of the region used the tomato in their cooking, and it was cultivated in southern Mexico and possibly elsewhere by around 500 BC. It is thought that a mutation from a small fruit native to Central America is the direct ancestor of the modern cultivated tomato.
