Hey guys in this video we take a look at the common elderberry or Sambucus canadensis. The Common Elderberry is a very popular plant that can be found along roadsides, railroad tracks, and in old fields. This is a very easy plant to identify but you will notice a few variations in its identification features, namely the leaves. The leaves are compound and grow in an opposite patter along the main stem of the shrub. There will be anywhere from 5 to 11 leaflets along the leaf stem and if we look at the margins of the leaves we will notice very fine serrations or teeth. The top of the leaves are a dark glossy green color whereas the underside is a greenish gray color. The stem of your Elderberry is round and green in color with little nubs running along the length. The stem is hollow with a very large pith if it's broken open. The white flowers will appear in June throughout July and grow in umbel like clusters and they will have five petals. Each umbel will have multiple flowers and after flowering is when the berries themselves start to appear.
