Brick facades are a classic, timeless look. Today, many builders opt to install energy-saving thin bricks over exterior walls with foam insulation. This instructional video from Ironrock shows the basics of this type of installation. ⭐ For more instructional videos and product information, check out: Ironrock https://ironrock.com/videos/ Royal Thin Brick® https://www.royalthinbrick.com/thin-brick-wall-installation/ METROBRICK® https://www.metrothinbrick.com/about/videos/ ======================================= Quicklinks 0:15 Thin Brick Installation over Continuous Insulation 0:37 Exterior Wall Assembly Sections 0:57 Installing Exterior Wall Insulation 1:17 Attaching Drip Edge 1:19 Attaching Flashing 1:30 Installing Metal Lath 1:41 Applying Scratch Coat 1:53 Allowing Scratch Coat to Dry 1:58 Applying Waterproof Membrane 2:20 Blending Brick from Cartons 2:54 Installing Thin Bricks 3:04 Installing Corner Pieces 3:50 Grouting Thin Brick with Grout Bag 4:23 Striking Grout Joints 4:43 Tools for Finishing Thin Brick Grout 5:01 Clean Up 5:17 Thin Brick - Built to Last a Lifetime This installation video will show how to install our METROBRICK® Thin Brick and Royal Thin Brick® over an exterior wall. Our video shows all sections of the wall assembly, emphasizing the installation of the facade. 🧱 Installing the Exterior Wall Insulation Beginning with installing the steel studs, rigid foam insulation, exterior rated sheathing and the building felt on your exterior wall. Then attach the drip edge and flashing. 🧱 Installing Metal Lath and Applying Scratch Coat In our installation, we use a galvanized metal lath with a diamond pattern and attach it with fasteners that go all the way through the studs. ⚠️ Attaching the metal lath only to the sheathing or foam installation is insufficient to keep the facade in place. A scratch coat of mortar is mixed and applied over the metal lath. It should completely embed the lath and make the wall flat and smooth, ready for waterproofing. Let the scratch coat cure for the recommended time by the mortar manufacturer. 🧱 Applying Waterproof Membrane To keep water from penetrating the substrate, apply a liquid waterproofing product per the technical datasheet for your selected product. Once the waterproofing membrane is fully cured, it is time to begin installing the thin brick. 🧱 Blending Brick from Cartons Most installers will use several cartons to complete a project when installing thin bricks. There may be slight variations during the manufacturing process. Therefore, it's very important to mix the cartons during installation to achieve the desired look. 💡 We are using an ANSI a118.15 mortar designed for exterior applications. 🧱 Installing the Thin Bricks For our demonstration, we are using a 3/8 square notched trowel. Embed each brick thoroughly and frequently check the mortar's coverage by lifting a brick that has been installed. The back of the brick should be covered entirely in mortar. Check for any twisted bricks or uneven grout joints and readjust as long as you are still within the working time of the mortar chosen. 🧱 Installing Corner Pieces Corner pieces are available to make the installation look like a traditional brick wall. These bricks should be back buttered with mortar to ensure complete contact. Once the thin bricks have been embedded, clean any mortar out of the grout joints and off the surface of the bricks before it has a chance to fully harden. 🧱 Grouting Thin Brick with Grout Bag There are a variety of methods to apply grout. For example, wax bricks are designed to be pressure washed after installation. And a full broadcast grounding method can be used with a grout float, similar to grouting tile. This method can also be used for smooth bricks or a wax grout release product. For this video, we bagged the grout into the joints to keep as much of the grout between the bricks and off the bricks' faces. Once the grout is cured to the point where it's dry to the touch, it can be tooled into the final shape. 🧱 Striking Grout Joints Joints can be formed using various tools, including a rake tool, tile float and concave jointer tool. However, most installations use a concave jointer tool, the method we are showing. 🧱 Clean Up Once grouting is complete and before the grout is completely cured, clean the grout from the face of the bricks. Cured grout is tough to remove. If the thin brick was waxed, use a high-temperature water spray to remove the wax and grout residue. ℹ️ With proper preparation and installation, a thin brick facade will last for the lifetime of the building. While the installation process with full brick is very different, it is similar to installing other hard surface materials such as tile and stone.
